Bet that caught your attention, but I did say Persian, not Iranian.

Great article on how the Ancient Persians engaged in chemical warfare against the Romans, almost 2,000 years ago. Seems they could gas their opponents by burning sulfur and bitumen and managed to defeat the Romans in present-day Syria.
