Joseph Stalin

Those Russians really like their leaders tough. In a nationwide poll, Joseph Stalin came in as the third most popular Russian in history despite having been responsible for the deaths of millions.

Stalin is thought to have caused widespread famine in Russia due to his policies of rapid industrialization. He is also infamous for the purges of the 1930s and 1940s during which his opponents were executed or sent to Gulags.

The current administration however, is taking a number of steps to sanctify the legacy of Stalin, as well as other figures in Russia’s history.

  1. Who could one say nyet to that moustache?

  2. Hi, Folks,

The nationwide poll you mention was evidently rigged.
In fact, Marshal Joseph Stalin came in as the FIRST most popular Russian in history.
    No doubt.
But the managers of the internet project “Name of Russia” became too much scared with the real result of the poll. At the same time they could not eliminate entirely the true winner — Stalin. So, it was decided to “allow” him to be placed at the third place.

    “. . . responsible for the deaths of millions. . .”
    Oh, dear!
The western brainwashing mass media machine works effectively enough.
You Westerners have been used to take for granted as the ultimate truth whatever lie which the western russophobic propaganda has been feeding you with.

    • Dear Michael,

Thank you for your input on the poll. It’s great to hear the opinion of someone belonging to Russia, a place that holds a lot of fascination for us. I think we should be challenging the usual perceptions we have of things.

No doubt Joseph Stalin had to have qualities that allowed him to defeat the Germans, transform the whole of Russia and rule for so long, yet still remain so popular. We definitely should reserve judgment on the matter until getting both sides of the story.

I’ve gone through your site and it is indeed very interesting. Would love to learn more on the matter. As you may have noticed, we have posted about other interesting things about Russia and this post was probably an exception.

      Cheers.
